How do you assess a SQL Server?

There could be various reasons why a SQL Server is running slow. With your help I could collect data from your server and see if we can identify the cause of the performance issue.
The default route is normally to check the configuration of the server, check you only have indexes that you need and are using and then see what SQL is running slow and why.

What is the most important SQL Server task?
Backups after running Database consistency checks (DBCC) is the most important task as this will allow you to recover your data to the last backup and if you have the database in ‘Full Backup’ mode then to when the last transaction log was saved.
Corruption happens, I hope not to you, but you need to prepare for it so running DBCC checks and backups are crucial in reducing the loss of data.
I use, and I suggest you to do, Ola Hallengren’s Maintenance Solution.
How can I identify the session which is causing problem?
Sometimes we need to identify which SQL process is causing an issue on the SQL Server, the best process is to use Adam Mechanic’s sp_WhoIsActive. I normally install this script ready into the master database so I can call it from where ever I am in the database and identify the session which is causing the problem.
This stored procedure is small and fast and should be part of your toolkit on the server.
